From 911 dispatcher to school resource officer, Dallas Pulliam has served the state of Kansas since 2010.
He decided to become a school resource officer because of his interactions with law enforcement growing up and his desire to be at PHS.
“It really wasn’t a want, it was more of a desire to be here to help not only the community of Pittsburg, but the troublesome kids and staff here at Pittsburg High,” Pulliam said.
Pulliam also states that positive interaction is key to connection. “Honestly, positive interactions,” Pulliam said, “Occasionally trash talking, but positive interactions for the most part.”
Pulliam believes that the biggest role he plays at PHS is making connections, good or bad, and bridge gaps between sometimes student and law enforcement, along with parents and law enforcement.
Officer Pulliam tries to connect with students by making positive connections and closing bridge gaps. “Probably the biggest thing I do is make connections, positive or negative, hopefully positive, bridge gaps between students and law enforcement and a lot of times parents and law enforcement,” Pulliam said. “Sometimes we don’t understand each other or what each other’s going through and me being here helps me, the sheriffs office and police understand what trials and tribulations you have going on in your lives.” In addition to that, Officer Pulliam doesn’t only make connections with students, but also law enforcement and parents.
Besides liking donuts and history, Pulliam had a feeling that being a part of the law was his big dream. “I thought about it growing up,” Pulliam said, “I started college, took some criminal justice classes, started working in law enforcement, finished out my degree and here I am.”
It’s pretty safe to say that the citizens of not just Pittsburg, but the people of Pittsburg High School, are in good hands with Pulliam on patrol.
