“blue velvet boy” by Brooklyn Hellwig

I.

i met a boy.

whose eyes gleamed like

deep Florida waters and

whose voice caressed me

like blue velvet during

late-night calls

over nothing important.

II.

i liked a boy

whose puffy cheeks were

speckled with freckles,

stars i hand-picked

from the night sky to

complement his bushy

brows and deep dimples.

III.

i broke a boy

who called me while i

cried and read me poems

until his dulcet tones lulled me.

whom i repaid by

crumbling

his world in my palm.

Brooklyn Hellwig won second place in the poetry contest this year.

Hellwig said she is honored to have received this award.

“It’s really nice to be recognized for your work,” Hellwig said. “All of my friends tell me my writing is good, but it’s totally different to have people with knowledge in the field of poetry to tell me I’m good.”
